IRIS, a young employee of the district court, gets ready for a new working day. Looking for some readings for the tram she finds her diary from her childhood. She puts it together with a novel into her handbag. The ride on the tram is unpleasant as always.

She finally arrives at the court were she attends an asylum hearing of an African man. Iris works as an typist. Vainly the young black man tries to answer the questions of the chairman. Grasping into her handbag Iris finds her diary, starts reading and gets confronted with pictures of her childhood: a demonstration, which she attended with her father, scary pictures from the news and her wishes for the future. Parallel to her reading the diary the African man tries to explain his story to the chairman. Also he is confronted with his past.
