SYNOPSIS
Kurt, in his mid 30s, is a compulsive systematic gambler with neither luck nor discipline. His main occupation is scraping together all the cash he can. He then loses it, gets into debt, borrows more, loses it again and so on. Everyday life for Kurt, whose gambling relapses have soured his relationship with his long-term girlfriend Manu.
One day Kurt "stumbles" across the possibility of letting a die make a decision in a game. He is inspired by a lucky chance as well as by a TV program on Mozart's "Dice Symphony," a musical curiosity in which every possible variation ends up having the same harmony. From now on Kurt's life will be determined by the irresistible pull of chance. Indeed, he starts developing a mania for letting the die make his everyday decisions. He thinks he's found a new, personal system not only for gambling, but for life as well. With a roll of the die, he chooses one of six job off ers and appears to be on his way back into society. But appearances can deceive: the arbitrariness of the die is far too dominant, and Kurt is too compulsive in his search for personal happiness. Manu can only go so far in helping Kurt, who's become too unreliable for her, and whose downfall is imminent and inevitable. Kurt now seems weightless as he drifts from one decision made by chance into another, squanders his money and meets Tanja, a drug addict who could become his new girlfriend - selected by the die.
Kurt returns to her place. He seems changed, and everything compulsive about him has given way to a strange lightness. After getting Tanja interested in his game, he gets her out of her social milieu and pays for her drug debts. They move through life as if in a dream and involve others in their "dierelationship" game. One of them is Franz, an old friend of Kurt's from earlier gambling days, who provides the necessary capital for the next game.
With Franz's money, Kurt, Franz and Tanja set off to a casino in the Czech Republic, since Kurt is not allowed to gamble in Austrian casinos anymore. Kurt's manic fatalism to let every decision be made by the die drives Franz crazy. He refuses to follow Kurt's peculiar logic and scoots with the money they've won. Having reached rock bottom, Kurt and Tanja now begin their love story. They check into a small boarding house, where they experience the freedom of the open, non-committal relationship created by the die. But it is only a matter of time before the feelings they have for one another rebel against the die's arbitrariness.
At this decisive point everything seems possible. Kurt and Tanja stop at a service station and Kurt waits for Tanja alone in the car. As he roles the die, the "1" triggers one of six different endings of the story. The different versions show the diabolical power of the die in various ways, and for the first time Kurt becomes aware of his limits and his needs.
